Good news: Many other mid-size levels are almost the same. Better news: This is a cruel class and the buyer can hardly be wrong. The Altima began less than $25,000, but the top version passed $35,000. We see better grades in more basic trims, which get good features but don’t have striking wheels and skins. Inside, Altima does not take almost the same risk. It’s standard mid-size FARE, which says: meat and potatoes without much flavor in the middle. 2021 Altima goes to work without pretense or talent. The 2021 Nissan Altima is currently in its sixth generation which was introduced as part of the 2021 model year. It was only back then that it got a design refresh. So it’s highly unlikely that the manufacturer would redesign it yet again. The hybrid variant, if there is one at all, could get credo specific badging but other than that expect nothing new. Although, things really improved for this mid-size sedan after its redesign. It got lower and wider and that really showed in the way this sedan drove too. Up front, there’s the signature V-Motion finished in chrome. Only, unlike on the Maxima, this one’s V dips deeper. It is because of that this sedan looks a lot more imposing now. Then there are the blacked-out active grille shutters being flanked by sharply styled LED headlights. They underscore the several character lines that run along the sides of this car. The 18-inch alloy wheels fit this sedan like gloves. The tail is tastefully done with charcoal rear diffuser, chrome-finished exhaust tips and Boomerang LED tail lamps.
The 2021 Nissan Altima is a good midsize car. It’s a great commuter car that has two capable engine options, great fuel economy estimates, and a gentle ride. Its seats are highly comfortable too. However, some of its rivals are roomier and feel more engaging from behind the wheel.
The Altima doesn’t offer a fuel-saving hybrid or eco-friendly plug-in-hybrid model as do many of its rivals, but its two gasoline engines have lofty EPA fuel-economy ratings and even better real-world results. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has estimates up to 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. However, more expensive models are rated as low as 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. The EPA estimates that all-wheel-drive models can earn up to 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. The VC-Turbo engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. On our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, the all-wheel-drive Altima achieved an eye-popping 41 mpg, while the VC-Turbo version recorded an impressive 37 mpg. The most fuel-efficient (nonhybrid) Accord and Camry earned 38 mpg and 45 mpg, respectively.
The current Altima also boasts a long list of standard features, including 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, cloth upholstery, a six-speaker AM/FM audio system, a 7-inch driver information display, an 8-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more. We expect this to remain the same in the 2021 Nissan Altima. Powering the 2021 Altima will be the same two engine options, starting with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces up to 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. The optional engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The Altima has a standard 188-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). While Nissan touts the innovative variable-compression technology, only the 2.5-liter engine can be had with all-wheel drive. We’ve driven both versions and can confirm that Nissan hasn’t given up on the sedan. The standard four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive had predictable, albeit unremarkable, acceleration. The engine grew noisier the harder we pressed the gas pedal, but the four-cylinder Camry we tested was equally loud at times. The VC-Turbo engine makes the Altima significantly quicker. It went from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and went from 50 to 70 mph (to simulate passing on the highway) in 4.1 seconds. The latter time was quicker than in both the most powerful Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

While the benefits of the latter are hard to quantify, we do recommend adding all-wheel drive for $1350 on the already attractively priced Altima SR. Along with a sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch wheels that make this family sedan more fun to drive, the SR model has more standard driver assists and several better features than the cheaper base model. We’d also spring for the Premium package that adds heated mirrors, heated front seats, and a sunroof.

In the year 2021, Nissan also introduced their Variable Compression Turbocharged motor as a more lucrative option with this four-door sedan. Otherwise, the Nissan Altima derives power from a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four engine which is standard on all variants. In case any hybridization of the lineup is expected to occur, it could be either the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo motor or the other 2.5-liter four-pot to receive aid from a battery. Speculations also suggest that the 2021 Nissan Maxima might be equipped with what is already offered with the 2021 Altima, apart from hybridization. Looking at its competitors, we can see that it is the Toyota Camry which is the most powerful. It also gets a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated motor but manages to churn 203 hp as opposed to Altima’s 188 hp. The real surprise, though, comes from Honda Accord. It gets the least capacity engine. However, that 1.5-liter inline-four motor is aided by a turbocharger. Hence, it is able to put out equal numbers of power and torque.

But for the peppiest performance, go with the Altima SR and Altima Platinum, which are available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 248 horsepower. These models also come with more safety features. All-wheel drive is available throughout the lineup for about $1,350, but it is not available in models with the turbocharged engine. The base Altima features the NissanConnect infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, two USB ports, a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Siri Eyes Free. Navigation is available, as are HD Radio and a nine-speaker premium Bose stereo. The convenient touch screen and large physical controls help make the infotainment system user-friendly. This Nissan rides smoothly over most roads. It’s not as athletic as some rivals, but it tackles turns with confidence. The SR trim’s suspension is firmer and helps it feel a bit sportier than the rest of the lineup. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available.
The Nissan Altima is a four-door family-size sedan that was redesigned just a couple of years ago. The 2021 redesign of the Altima brought with it a host of new technology features, several of which were packaged into Nissan’s ProPilot Assist system. Even base-model Altimas get items such as forward collision mitigation, with other features including blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors available as options. And if you go with the top-level ProPilot features, you get high-tech systems such as stop-and-go adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. We expect the 2021 Nissan Altima to offer the same high level of technology along with a spacious interior, comfortable ride and impressive fuel economy. The Altima does have a few drawbacks worth noting. The interior feels a bit below segment standards due to some cheap plastic panels and driving excitement is lacking, especially compared to rivals such as the Honda Accord and Mazda 6. The Altima, however, does represent a good value for the class and is worth considering.

Most of the changes to the Altima for 2021 revolve around safety equipment. Nissan made its Safety Shield 360 suite of driver assistance equipment standard on the SR trim and made the Driver Assist package optional on the S trim.
